Story Quilts Guide - Penelope E. Venola, Spurgeon Intermediate |

This curriculum unit links history, literature, and art. It begins with a discussion of ancient myths followed by an overview of what I define as modern myths: stories based on personal memoirs of the authors, enhanced by imagination and dreams. The specific modern myth discussed is Faith Ringgold's Tar Beach. It is both a written story and a large-scale quilt of the same name. A short history of quilts completes the narrative section of this unit. There are four lesson plans. First, Reading Myths, covers the reading and discussion of ancient myths. Second, Reading Modern Myths, is a more in-depth study of Faith Ringgold's Tar Beach, discussing both the story and the art-work. Third, Writing Personal Mythologies, is the lesson plan for developing each student's personal memoir in the style of a myth. Lastly, Story Quilts is a lesson for incorporating the personal myth into a design for a quilt-block (a single component in a larger quilt) using a collage technique. Each includes a border design, the written story, and a central visual design. Lesson plans include many discussions and writing prompts to stimulate student imagination and creativity. |
