Envisioning the History of California's Missions. Using Guided Language Acquisition - Patricia A. Ingles, Harvey Elementary

Envisioning the history of California's Missions is a thematic unit design as a visual and interactive representation for a fourth grade class of limited English proficient students from Southern California. The unit was design using the methodology and strategies from Specially Designed Academic Instruction in English (SDAIE), and Project GLAD, i.e., Guided Language Acquisition Development, with the dual purpose of provided limited English learners academic content at their grade level and enhancing their English language development in an exciting, stimulating environment.

The topic of the California Missions is a high interest topic for students and teachers, where students become inspired and eager to learn based on the activities using the SDAIE and GLAD techniques. The classroom becomes an environment where students enjoy interacting as each student gains academic content for each student's grade level, and enhancing their English language development skills at a pace that allows the student to raise their self-confidence and motivation to achieve in school.

Through presenting the majority of the academic content visually, and having the students working cooperatively, they will focus on the ways in which they can contribute to the class, as opposed to their limitations because of their English language skills. The classroom becomes a print-rich environment filled with visual representations for students to make meaningful connections to the content they are absorbing daily.
