I work with students who come from all different types of backgrounds, ranging from effective home environments to unstable home situations. I do not fully comprehend what these kids go home to at night. Over the past few years there have been countless stories of young adults who misdirected their anger, often at the expense of innocent lives. The message these events send is clear: our youth do not know how to deal with their anger. They need skills for releasing their emotions and life strategies to use so that they don't give up when faced with adversity. But the question is, where do they learn these strategies? I participated in the Hardy Personality Seminar, which was led by Dr. Deborah Khoshaba and Dr. Salvatore Maddi. My unit is designed to be a curriculum for the Student Council class, but it would also work well in any type of Leadership class. The unit includes a series of lessons, all of which focus around teaching students the coping skills and strategies they need to survive in today's world. I believe that it is time we start teaching our youth how to take care of themselves, and the world around them. This unit focuses on this need. |
