This curriculum unit is designed for integration in a sixth or seventh grade pre-algebra course. The curriculum unit presents two activities that attempt to address the challenges of designing curriculum for low-income minority students. The main purpose of this curriculum piece is to present practical, yet powerful learning experiences for students using low-cost, teacher-made manipulatives. Popsicle sticks painted on both sides (one side painted red, the other black) will be utilized to model the concepts of signed integer addition and subtraction, and later the concept of binary numbers. |
