The Student Perspective

The Upward Bound at UCI is more than just an academic program; we are a small family of students that share the same desire to be successful in school and to go to college. I was in UB for three years in high school and it guided me and prepared me for college. If it wasn’t for this program, I do not think I would be where I am today, a proud college student at UCLA. At times, I felt like my family did not really understand what I was going through at school. It was not that they did not want to assist me; it was that they did not know how. However, thanks to the information, guidance, and received we received through UB, they eventually understood how to help me achieve my goal.

One of the most helpful features of Upward Bound is the tutoring sessions. I really appreciated our tutors and learned a lot from them. I also really liked that they are able to relate to us, because many of them come from the same backgrounds as us. Many of them are also the first in their families to go to college. Seeing that they have successfully made it to a university really motivated and inspired me to do the same. Having our tutors through an entire academic year makes it possible for us to get to know one another at a professional and personal level. I’m still in contact with my some of my tutors. Our tutors definitely made it possible for me to see things from a wider perspective and it helped me to make better choices while I was in high school.

The summer program was my favorite part of being in UB. Because of the academic preparation classes we took over the summer, I felt that I was always one step ahead of my classmates in school. The best part of the summer program was that I got to pretend to be a college student by living in the dorms. Not only was this an eye-opening experience for me, but it also helped prepare my parents to see what it would be like when I left home to go to college. When the day came for me to move to UCLA to start my college education, I can still remember the smiles on my family’s faces and their tears of joy, because upward bound had prepared all of this for that moment.

Throughout my time in Upward Bound, I grew as a person and a student. UB has been a great blessing in my life, and in the life of my family, and I would like to share our deep appreciation for their hard work and dedication to me, and all the past, present, and future students in the program.
