Helping Students Achieve and Succeed

UC Irvine's Upward Bound program serves the students from Anaheim, Katella, and Loara High Schools in the Anaheim Union High School District.

Upward Bound provides fundamental support to participants in their preparation for college entrance. The program provides opportunities for participants to succeed in their precollege performance and ultimately in their higher education pursuits. Upward Bound program serves: high school students from low-income families; and high school students from families in which neither parent holds a bachelor's degree. The goal of Upward Bound is to increase the rate at which participants complete secondary education and enroll in and graduate from institutions of postsecondary education.

The Student Perspective

"UB definitely helped prepare me to transition to college after high school. Since I am the person in my family to go to college, I had very little information about what I needed to do to prepare myself for college. A major concern of mine was how to pay for college. I had thought that it would be impossible for me to go to college, because my family would not be able to afford it. However, being in Upward Bound eventually learned that money should never be a reason to not go to college..."

"The summer program was my favorite part of being in UB. Because of the academic preparation classes we took over the summer, I felt that I was always one step ahead of my classmates in school. The best part of the summer program was that I got to pretend to be a college student by living in the dorms. Not only was this an eye-opening experience for me, but it also helped prepare my parents to see what it would be like when I left home to go to college..."

"Being in this program has changed my life. I never thought that I would be able to make it to college, but after learning information throughout this program, I know that it will not be impossible. I learned many things in this program and not only did I gain knowledge, but I gained confidence in myself and for my future as a college student. Without Upward Bound I would not care as much for school because I would never have understood how important it is..."
