3 Primary Semicolon Rules

  1. Semicolons join independent clauses in place of coordinate conjunctions

    People were so loud at the concert; I could hardly hear the music.

  2. Semicolons join independent clauses when using a conjunctive adverbs

    I completed all of my homework; therefore, I can now talk on the phone.

  3. Semicolons divide items in a series when the items contain commas

    For our vacation, I went to Savannah, GA; Columbia, SC; and Asheville, NC.

Remember when using conjunctive adverbs, you must join two independent clauses:
  • I wanted to buy a new dress; however, I could not find one I liked.
