  • Hello UBlies! As we all know, the holidays are just around the corner, and with that said so is our traditional annual UB Holiday Party and opportunities to get involved. There will be a lot of planning and contributions needed. We were thinking of possible dates for the party: Friday, Dec. 11th and Thursday, Dec. 17th. What dates sound better? What activities should we have? For example, last year we had a school gingerbread house contest and Secret Santa, but we can have more this year, depending on what the majority want for the party. Also, who would be interested in decorations? Who would be interesting in music? Please email me or Jessica if you are interested! Andy: (714) 535-2308.

  • What's up UBlies! We are finally in our second quarter, so we are getting closer to the end of the first semester. This is the time when grades will start to count even more than before, but we can make this easier by counting on each other. How was everybody's Halloween? atg72693@yahoo.com

  • For those UBlies who remember Lilly Gomez, the previous UB Academic Coordinator, she just had her baby this past Monday, November 2! She had a baby girl, Isabella. Both mommy and baby are back home and resting comfortably. If you like to send her an email to wish her congratulations I think that she would appreciate that very mch. Her email address is: lilliang83@yahoo.com

  • Two more tutors will be joining the UB tutoring team starting this week. One of them is someone that you are all very familiar with. Let's welcome back Jose Alamilla! The other tutor will be a new face to many of you, but she is not a stranger to UB. Lupe Saldivar is a former UBly from the class of 2006. We're excited to have the both of them join us during this school year, and they are very excited to get started. Below is a short introduction from Lupe:

"My name is Guadalupe Saldivar and I am currently finishing my last year at UCI. I am a math major with a minor in education and Spanish. I plan to become a high school math teacher. My goal in life is to make a difference in students’ lives and help them achieve academically. I really enjoy working with high school students and I love learning about our education system. I graduated from Anaheim High School in 2006. I really enjoyed my high school years at Anaheim and that is why I want to teach there once I get my credentials. I was once part of the UB Program and I know what a great program this is, so I am very excited to be part of this program once again. I look forward to meeting you all."

  • A general reminder about tutoring: Tutoring sessions are NOT required. All UBlies who attend tutoring should only do so if they choose to and because they want to get help with their school work. Those who attend tutoring for reasons other then to get help with school work will be asked to leave tutoring. This may sound harsh, but we want to ensure that those students who are going to tutoring to get work done are not being distracted by other students who are there for other reasons, such as to hang out, or because they are being made to go by their parents. I highly encourage UBlies to hang with one another, but tutoring is not the place for that.

  • Today marks the start of the second quarter at school! We want to wish everyone continued succcess in school. I hope everyone is getting the grades they want in their classes. If not, don't forget to take advantage of the tutoring sessions.

  • SENIORS: The UC and CSU applications are due at the end of this month! If you have not started on it, OMG! Get on it!! If you have started, get a move on and finish it. There is no point in waiting until the last minute. The best advice we can give you is this: GET IT DONE!

  • Hello Ublies! This is the last week of the quarter and, before we know it, it will be the end of the semester and then the year, so let's keep up the hard work. How is everyone? Keep me updated! You can email me at atg72693@yahoo.com.

  • Due to the minimum day schedule at Anaheim, Katella, and Loara High Schools, and that this Saturday is Halloween, tutoring sessions schedule on Friday, October 30 is canceled. There will be NO tutoring tomorrow, Friday, October 30. Happy Halloween weekend everyone!

  • A big THANK YOU goes out to all the UBlies who took the time to write a letter to talk about their experience in the UB Summer Program. Your letters will make a big difference in helping to make sure that UB will be around a long long time. This thank you is coming out to you a little late, but it's important to give none-the-less. So this BIG THANKS goes out to the following UBlies:

America Castellanos Jessica Perez Monserrat Castro Perez
Andy Tovar Guzman Jessica Zendeias Phoi Sin
Atilano Gomez Jocelyn De La Cruz Radet You
Criselva Charco Joselyn Diaz Saray Arvizu
Henry Echeverria Justin Colvin Stephanie Martinez

There are those who only TALK about making a difference. You all ACTED to make that difference. Kudos to you and keep it up.

  • A UB alumnus, Linda Munoz, class of 2008 recently sent an email to let us know how she is doing in college. We would like to share her message with everyone so that you can get an idea of what college is like for a college UBly, and how Upward Bound has helped her so far.

"Hi Tony, How have you been? I wanted to send you an email just to let you know how my college experience has been. I love college, I have met some amazing and inspirational people and staff members who are always providing me with words of enthusiasm. It is almost like they are my UCSC version of Upward Bound. Now that I have begun my second year I find myself becoming consumed with homework and studying, but I honestly love it. I am an Earth Sciences Major (I want to have a concentration is seismology) and I have recently realized I want to double major in Math. I have been studying really hard and I honestly believe that UB helped me come into college with a positive mindset because I knew that I would have to work hard from the start in order to really excel. So I would like to thank you for every word of inspiration and every effort you made during my time in Upward Bound because I feel like they made me a stronger person."

Linda is a second year student at UC Santa Cruz. She is also Ricky's sister.

  • By now all UBlies should have seen a copy of the EDGE magazine. If you have no idea what this is, I highly recommend that you talk to a UBly who does know and has a copy of it. Read through it, because there is a worth while surprise in there that you will not want to miss out on. Trust me, if you miss out on this, you will be like "Awwww, I missed out!" The EDGE can also be downloaded online. Here is the link: http://www.eaop.uci.edu/edge/index.html

  • Hey, what's up all UB seniors! Jessica is right! Personally, I am not going through the application process yet, but I understand and know that it takes a lot of work, so keep it up! But we can rely on each other for support to finish those college apps! So keep up the hard work!

  • Hey Senior UBlies! Make sure you are all keeping up with your College Applications and Scholarships! Don't procrastinate! Don't put off for tomorrow what you can do today! If you guys have questions feel free to ask Tony or Julie. You can even ask me I am willing to help to the best of my abilities. I know it is stressful! But we'll all get through it together! Also keep up the grades and attend tutoring if you need it! Most importantly don't fall into SENIORITIS! Hang in there guys!

  • Upward Bound welcomes the newest addition to our tutoring family, Matthew Rhodes! Matt is a sophomore at UCI and will be one your UB tutors for this school year. Below is a quick hello that he would like to say to all the UBlies:

"Hello! My name is Matthew Rhodes, but most people call me Matty. I'm a second year student at UC Irvine. I am majoring in Literary Journalism and write for the UC Irvine New University newspaper. My hobbies include reading, writing, and playing a wide variety of sports. I am really excited to meet all of you students and can't wait for this year to unfold."

  • A big "GREAT JOB" to all the UBlies who have turned in both week 1 and week 2 journals on time! We really enjoy reading your thoughts and it's a great way for us to start off our week every week. Even though this is technically a "official" UB assignment and something that you a required to do, we still appreciate the time each of you take to let us get to know you better. You guys and gals rock!

  • SENIORS: According to Julie you are all off to a great start on your college applications. However, it appears that some of you maybe stressing out more than you actually need to. I want to take this moment to remind all the seniors that you are not going through this process alone. You have classmates, both UB and non-UB, that are going through the same motions as you are. If you can, talk to your friends and classmates so that you can support each other. Moreover, Julie is actively keeping track of your college application progress. She will continue to work with you and to help you up until the very end. If you have questions or any worries, you need to feel absolutely free to contact Julie or Tony anytime. That's what being a UBly is all about. You all have an unlimited pass to bug us any time, and as often as you want.

  • SENIORS: The rules for earning a senior sash has been updated in the Senior Center page. Make sure you review the requirements. It is my hope that every UB senior will be able to earn a sash by the end of this school year.

  • It was great to see all the UBlies who were able to make it to the Cultural Field Trip event this past Saturday. Based on everyone's journals, I gather it was a worth while trip and that everyone had a great time at the event, as well as having the chance to be all together again.

For the UBlies who were not able to attend you were all missed, and we all look forward to seeing you again at tutoring and the next Saturday Session.

  • Last week, Anaheim High School held a community event to celebrate the newly renovated campus. At this event our very own Neda Arora represented the Anaheim High School student body and spoke in front of all the attendees along side the school principal, district superintendent, and other various community leaders. Good job Neda!

  • UB Tutoring Sessions officially starts this Thursday, October 15. Refer to the tutoring page for the tutoring schedule.

Remember, this year tutoring locations will be restricted to your local area. If you need to attend a tutoring site that is not close to your school site, please contact Julie ASAP. Your tutors will have a roster of students who can attend their tutoring sessions. If you are not on the list you will be asked to leave and attend another tutoring location.

Anaheim High School UBlies Only: Since the Anaheim Central Library will not be available as a tutoring location this year, you will need to choose either the Sunkist Library or the Euclid Library as an alternative location. Please make your decision based on proximity (distance) to your home. Once you choose a location you will only be allowed to attend tutoring at that location for the rest of the year. Please email Julie with your choice ASAP.

  • This Saturday, October 10 is the UB Cultural Field trip. We will be leaving promptly from Loara High School at 6:00 PM. Remember, to dress appropriately. As always, don't be late, because the bus won't wait. See you all then.

Note: You MUST complete a request to be excused form if you are not able to attend.

  • ALL UBLIES: We need your Zangle account information. All UBlies are requested to email your username and password to Julie by the of week. This is a mandatory UB assignment which means failure to complete this assignment will result in a two page paper.

  • The first UB weekly journal is due by this Sunday, October 11 before 11:59 pm. Remember, your journals should be emailed to Tony.

  • As of today, we have not yet confirmed the begin date for UB tutoring. We are hoping to start it as early as next week. More information will be posted as soon as it becomes available.

  • Anaheim UBlies only: Saturday, October 10 is the day of the Anaheim Homecoming Dance. The dance will take place at the same time as the UB field trip. As such, all Anaheim UBlies who want to attend the homecoming dance will be excused from the field trip. Please be aware that this is not a general excuse for Anaheim UBlies. If you will not attend the homecoming dance, you will be expected to attend the field trip. Again, this only applies to Anaheim High School UBlies.

  • Welcome to the start of the new school year! By now you should be in your third week of school. I hope everyone is off to a great start and that your class schedules are all set. If not, make sure you get it squared away as soon as possible. If you need help with your schedules contact Julie ASAP.

  • SENIORS: SAT fee waivers have finally arrived. If you need a SAT fee waiver, please contact Julie.

  • SENIORS: To give you all a head start on your 20 scholarships for your senior year your student rep, Andy Tovar-Guzman, wants to share the following information with you: http://www.hsf.net/Scholarships.aspx?id=72

  • The UB website has been updated to reflect this year's schedule. The Calendar and Events page have been updated with all the important dates that you will need to know for this school year. The Policies and Procedures page has also been updated. Make sure you take the time to go over the updated policies and procedures because you will be held accountable for them. Don't stress out too much, we covered all of them over the summer.

  • Many of you have already asked when UB tutoring sessions will be available. Unfortunately, UCI students do not start their school year until the end of September, so tutoring will not start until at least after the first Saturday Session, October 3. Remember, there is a new tutoring policy for this year so be sure to go over it.

  • The first Saturday Session is scheduled for Saturday, October 3, 8:00 AM - 12:00 PM. Most likely the session will be held at Anaheim High School's Career Center. We will confirm the location by next week.

  • An opportunity for a field trip came up recently, so we are scheduling a UB event for Saturday, October 10, from 6:30 PM - 10:00 PM. This is a MANDATORY UB event so all UBlies will be expected to participate. More information on this event will be posted in the coming weeks. For now, mark your calendar and save this date and time. If you are unable to attend because of a scheduling conflict you must fill out request to be excused form asap. For a brief summary of the event you can visit: http://www.fordtheatres.org/en/events/091010_2000.asp
