Guidelines
Southern California Regional
Any high school student, grades 9 - 12, from Imperial, Kern, Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, San Diego, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, or Ventura County is eligible to present a paper on an original research project if all requirements are met. No group research projects may be presented.
To be considered, students will be required to select a research topic, conduct an experimental study, and submit a paper describing their discoveries. Qualified scientists will review the papers. The reviewers will provide suggestions for improvement and the papers will be returned to the students for appropriate revisions and resubmission. Students whose papers are selected will be invited to present their findings at the Symposium. The students' science or mathematics teacher will be invited to accompany the student to the Symposium. Applicants who are not selected to present their paper will be invited to submit a poster describing their work, to be displayed during the final day of the Symposium.

Abstracts of research paper is limited to 200 words (see abstract instructions).
Research paper may be no longer than 20 typewritten pages. See the National JSHS web site for suggestions and guidelines on how to write a paper including margins, font size etc. Both abstract and paper must be submitted by the January deadline.
Presentation of paper must not exceed 12 minutes(REGIONAL RULE). Audiovisual aids may be used. Overhead, slide projectors, and computers (PowerPoint) will be provided.
Preliminary judging will be on the first day of the Symposium; final judging on the second day. Any student who ranks first in his or her category will be eligible to participate in the final round of judging.
