The vision for the Future Teacher Highway (FTH) is to pool regional resources to recruit and support future teachers along the education continuum, from K-12 to the community college and the university level.

| A regional, collaborative approach is necessary to meet current and future demands for highly qualified K-12 math and science teachers, especially in high-need school districts. The vision for the Future Teacher Highway (FTH) is to pool regional resources to recruit and support future teachers along the education continuum, from K-12 to the community college and the university level. The premise is to build upon the excellent current efforts in Southern California to address the demand for highly qualified teachers, emphasize the critical need for quality teaching in math and science, and support student choice to best meet their teaching career goals.
The UCI Teacher Education Academy for Community College Scholars in Math & Science (UCI TEACH Math & Science), a summer residential program for community college students interested in teaching careers, is an example of building upon an existing regional program. UCI is also preparing to submit proposals for state approval of single subject matter preparation programs in math and science to facilitate undergraduates’ ability to demonstrate subject matter competence as a prerequisite for earning a credential.

| LOCAL AND REGIONAL STRATEGIES
The Future Teacher Highway, locally and regionally, utilizes several strategies to:
- Foster early student interest in math and science teaching careers
- Increase valuable K-12 fieldwork opportunities for high school, community college, and university students
- Enhance communication and networking among institutions to facilitate the matriculation of future teachers into credential programs
- Collaborate on data collection to support regional networking
- Customize support of the credentialing process for “emergency status” teachers in high-need school districts
- Design collaborative induction programs for first-year teachers and support local efforts in teacher retention
