A Focused Approach to Frontloading English Language Instruction for Open Court Reading, K-6

DESCRIPTION:

CRLP Focused Approach to Frontloading Language for Open Court Reading is designed to support English Learners and the teachers who serve them. This 20 hour professional development institute prepares teachers to effectively teach language throughout the instructional day with particular emphasis on how to link language instruction to reading instruction using the California State Board-adopted Open Court Reading program.

Frontloading Language is pre-teaching grammatical forms, sentence structures, and vocabulary for an upcoming lesson. The objective of Frontloading Language is to prepare students in advance for upcoming language demands which are likely to interfere with comprehension and participation. Through frontloading language, English Learners are ensured access to the core curriculum because they are explicitly taught the sentence structures and vocabulary needed to both learn and demonstrate their understanding of content skills and concepts.

OUTCOMES:

Through presentation, demonstration, and group interaction, training participants will:

  • Learn how to use the new Open Court Reading English Learner Support Guide.
  • Realize the distinction between simply teaching in English and effectively teaching English.
