Spanish-to-English Bi-literacy Transfer (SEBT) Program
DESCRIPTION:
The California Reading and Literature Project is pleased to offer two professional development institutes for the K-5th grade teachers delivering California’s Spanish language arts program adoptions:
- Houghton Mifflin Lectura, or
- SRA’s Foro Abierto
This institute has been carefully designed to effectively promote Spanish-to-English bi-literacy transfer.
The institute includes:
- Concepts of Print
- Phonological/ Phoneme Awareness
- Phonics
- Fluency (w/ High Frequency Words)
- Academic Language/Vocabulary
- Comprehension (i.e., strategies & skills)
OUTCOMES:
- Understand scientifically-based reading research in bilingual school contexts
- Learn models of how to teach English literacy by harnessing students’ Spanish knowledge-base
- Utilize a scope and sequence for the introduction of English literacy skills in a Spanish language arts context that prepares students for the English versions of each CA-adopted programs
- Use literacy assessments in both languages to plan reading interventions
- Plan and practice instruction using a bi-literacy transfer approach
HOW WILL ENGLISH LEARNERS BENEFIT?
English Learners will benefit as they transition from Spanish reading to English more effectively by participating in an environment for English literacy to be learned in an “additive approach across grades.”
