"When families of all backgrounds are engaged in their children's learning, their children tend to do better in school, stay in school longer, and pursue higher education. Clearly, children at risk of failure or poor performance can profit from the extra support that engaged families and communities provide." (Henderson, A.T., Mapp, K. L. 2002-p. 73)
Everyday Literacy for Families (ELF)
DESCRIPTION:
ELF is designed to inform and engage parents in supporting literacy learning for young children. Everyday, authentic literacy strategies are modeled and linked to PreK expectations-Desired Results Developmental Profile-Revised (2006 DRDP-R) and K-4 California English/Language Arts Content Standards. Site-based teams of early childhood & elementary educators and parent leaders are trained and supported to implement ongoing Everyday Literacy for Families (ELF) events that meet the needs of their community. ELF events model ways to connect with local library programs and other school and community-based family literacy resources.
Teachers are trained to guide parents to see how the activities in everyday life are linked to developmentally appropriate practices. Parents are guided to use everyday activities that will support ongoing, purposeful learning. Texas Education Agency "Language and Early Literacy Prekindergarten Curriculum Guidelines" are listed as questions for consideration at the beginning of each of the ten categories of strategies.
"There is increasing evidence that parental beliefs and attitudes regarding literacy and reading in particular influence children's literacy development..."(Snow, Burns, and Griffin, 1998-p. 138)
"Children who are successful at becoming literate view reading and writing as authentic activities from which they get information and pleasure and by which they communicate with others. They know what reading and writing are really for and want to be successful at it." (Cunningham, Allington, 1994-p. 21)
