The Native American Heritage Day Bill encourages Americans of all backgrounds to observe Friday, November 28, as Native American Heritage Day, through appropriate ceremonies and activities. It also encourages public elementary and secondary schools to enhance student understanding of Native Americans by providing classroom instruction focusing on their history, achievements, and contributions. As a state Assemblyman, Rep. Baca introduced the legislation that established the fourth Friday of September as Native American Day in California – which became state law in 1998.

American Indian Summer Institute in Computer Science
Sunday, July 13 through Saturday, August 2, 2008
For: 9th - 12th grade students
Location: UCI Campus and Dormitories
Description: AISICS is a three-week residential summer program for students to live in dorms on the beautiful UCI campus while they work with professors, college students, and invited American Indian elders and storytellers to develop interactive story projects that combine computer game technology with traditional American Indian culture and traditions. At AISICS students will learn about the computer sciences and high technology fields and they will be introduced to a university environment. In the Communication Skills segment of the program students will write down traditional stories, create videos to post on YouTube, give short presentations to other students, and complete a college application form. AISICS is committed to assisting students in pursuing a traditional four-year education, possibly in high technology, while retaining their cultural pride and identity.

American Indian Summer Academy
Saturday, July 5 through Saturday, July 12, 2008
For: 9 th - 12th grade students
Location: UCI Campus and Dormitories
Description: UCI hosts a free one week summer program for American Indian high school students. Students must be attending a California High School and have an intent to pursue higher education. During the program, students will reside in the UCI dormitories and participate in various interactive presentations from the different departments at UCI. In the afternoons, they will engage in cultural workshops and activities as well as field trips and social events.

American Indian Summer Transfer Academy

For: Community College Students and High School Students Graduating in 2008
Location: UCI Campus and Dormitories
Description: In the Summer of 2008, UCI will host the inaugural summer program for community college students and high school graduates. The Academy will provide information on transfer options, with special attention to the Transfer Admission Guarantee (TAG) program.

7th Annual UCI Pow Wow
First Weekend in June

Location: Mesa Court Field (corner of University and Campus)
Description: Powwows are traditional gatherings meant to celebrate, honor and respect Native culture. Come listen to the sounds of Native drums, browse and purchase handmade Native jewelry and goods from vendors, and enjoy the skill and beauty of traditional Native dance. And don't forget the fry bread!
This event is organized by the American Indian Student Association. Admission is free and open to everyone! Vendors: See Powwow page for Vendor applications. Spaces are still available.

American Indian Graduation Ceremony
May 2008
For: Graduating American Indian Students
Location: UCI Mesa Court Lawn
Description: The AIRP recognizes the achievements of Native students through a Native Student Graduation Ceremony every spring. Native high school, undergraduate, graduate, and professional students and their families, are honored in the ceremony. An Honor Song then recognizes the graduates and the ceremony is complemented by a feast featuring traditional and contemporary Native foods.

"Four Year Plan" Workshop

UCI Ancestor 5K Run/Walk

Description: From tiny tots still wobbly on their feet to veteran long-distance runners, the public is invited to participate in UC Irvine's 1st Annual Ancestor Run/Walk featuring a 5K run/walk and a "Tiny Tot 1K." The course for the 5K run/walk is designed to display the beauty of the UC Irvine campus. Though slightly challenging in some areas, the course was designed to allow runners and walkers of all levels to enjoy the route. All registrants will receive a UCI Ancestor Run t-shirt.
