Native American Heritage Month 2007

"Empowerment Through Education: Modern Day Natives"

This month is meant to use education as a source of empowerment and growth for the campus and community. We hope to motivate the campus to become proactive in supporting one another. AISA believes that in order for one to progress, another must lend a hand; we believe that is our responsibility to everyone.

Note: As long as there is a need, AISA will be providing donation relief boxes for those affected by the San Diego fires at all NAHM events. Please bring canned/non-perishables to share as you are able.

EVENTS:

November 7, 14, 28, 3-4pm Aldrich Park Rock Garden
UCI Drum Circle
Every Wednesday the Drum Circle invites anyone to come and learn Native American, Native Mexican and Indigenous drum songs. There is no negativity or judgement in the circle; it is a place where everyone is welcome to express themselves from the heart. There is no right or wrong way to do this, so don't be shy!

November 2, 12-2pm CCC Conference Room
Dreamcatcher Workshop
The campus is invited to come and learn to make their own free dreamcatcher, and to learn about the stories and history behind the dreamcatcher.

November 8, 11-2pm Rainbow Festival
AISA Frybread Sale
The American Indian Student Assoc. will be selling delicious frybread during the afternoon. Information about SNAPS will also be available at the AISA booth. Look for the teepee!

November 13, 11-1pm CCC Conference Room

Executive Director of Strong Hearted Native Women Coalition, Germain Omish-Guachena, will be giving an interactive presentation on the staggering reality of sexual assault and violence committed towards Indigenous women.

November 29, 12-2 Flagpoles/Ring Road
SNAPS Ethnic Studies Rally
The events of the month will culminate in cultural performances, including but not limited to the UCI Native Drum Circle and Aztec dancers, and community speakers at the flagpoles, meant to educate the campus about the importance of expanding Native and Pilipino studies on UCI's campus, and then motivating students to become active in strengthening this demand. A rally will follow to express this demand to the entire campus.
